More than 3 million Americans have speech disorders.

Some Common Speech Disorders Include: Stuttering, Cluttering, Articulation Disorders and Apraxia.

It's easy to take the ability to speak for granted, but producing fluent speech without errors is actually a complex process. When we speak, we must coordinate muscles from various body parts and systems, including the larynx, which contains the vocal cords; the teeth, lips, tongue, and mouth; and the respiratory system.

Normal speech may seem effortless, but it actually requires precise timing, nerve, and muscle control.

On the flip side the ability to understand language and produce speech is coordinated by the brain. A person with brain damage from an accident, stroke, or birth defect may have both speech and language problems.

Mark Felsenfeld is a Certified Speech Language Pathologist. He has worked in public schools and home health care as a speech-language pathologist for over 25 years. Currently he is now providing home care services for several home health care agencies and is taking on private practice cases. Click here to find out more about Mark!
